For us Southern California boys, there is really nothing better then spending a weekend down at the beach, taking in the sun, surf and adventures that it holds. This year was the third anniversary of our annual San Clemente surf trip and it was no exception with campfires, kayak trips to La Jolla and hours of surfing and relaxing.
We set out in the afternoon and got down to the campsite at around 5, giving us enough time to set up and still get some surfing in before the sun went down. The rest of the group came down later that night and we set up an epic bonfire to cook dinner, unload the rest of the truck and roast s’mores. My little Nissan was filled to the brim.
On Saturday morning we woke up and headed down to La Jolla to spend some time kayaking in the sea caves with out friends at La Jolla Kayak and attempting to see sharks. Unfortunately this is the second unsuccessful shark expedition I have gone on as there was an a lot of algae in the water and it blocked most of what you could see. We did have a great time kayaking though and I would highly recommend it as the caves in La Jolla are beautiful.
After that we headed back to the site and grabbed our boards to head out to the waves. The sets were back and forth but overall there were some decent waves to surf and it was a great time just being in the water during such a perfect day. Most of the below pictures are of Paul who is the best surfer in our group. There was even some other surfers doing aerials which was awesome to watch.
After that we headed up to the top of the cliffs to check out the sunset, which always seems to be pretty epic in this area. The beauty is hard to capture in a picture but I tried my best.
It was another successful weekend spent camping in San Clemente. The only drawback of the experience is that you have to reserve a spot 6 months in advance so you have to know pretty far ahead of time that you want to camp. However, at a cost of $35 a night, camping here is a steal and is perfect for the whole family.
Check out the rest of the pictures below and leave a comment if you have experience camping here or in other parts of Southern California.
